A fan to cool down by the bed at night? This is what you need to consider regarding power consumption, installation and your health

Summer doesn’t give us a break from the heat, even at night. A standard fan can help. But there are a few things you should keep in mind.

Do fans really help with heat? Yes and no, it depends on what you expect from them. A fan does not cool the room itself, as our colleagues at GameStar have tested in detail. It does not lower the room temperature, as it merely circulates the air – it just sets it in motion. But this breeze is pleasant – especially at night when you are falling asleep on tropical nights.

Fan, how to use it correctly

If you want to use a fan in the bedroom to cool down, follow these tips to avoid any health problems:

  • Place the fan two to three meters away from you.
  • Don’t direct the airflow (only) at your head. If it swings on its own, only let the artificial breeze hit your face occasionally. If the fan is static, then the air should only hit your body.
  • Set the fan to the lowest setting. This not only saves electricity, but also your hearing, as the device becomes quieter.
  • Why shouldn’t the fan point at your head the whole time? The constant breeze can not only lead to tension in the neck, but also irritate the eyes. Conjunctivitis can be a result. In addition, all kinds of tiny particles are blown towards you in the air: dust and dirt or even pollen. You may therefore suffer from irritated airways.

Anyone who suffers from a house dust allergy should be particularly careful when using a fan.

How much does the electricity used by a fan cost? Fans come in all sorts of sizes, but we’ll assume a value of around 40 watts. Amazon and similar portals have a whole host of devices in this class. If we assume an average running time of around 10 hours at night, that works out to 0.4 kilowatt hours per day.

Of course, we don’t know exactly where you live and prices will vary depending on the city, village or region. If you want to have an overview of what offers are available in your region, take a look at Check24, for example; searching by postcode will give you immediate results.

For the next calculation, we will assume a value of 30 cents per kilowatt hour. In the end, we arrive at around 15 cents per night used. So after a summer month, you will pay your energy supplier around 4.65 euros for this additional refreshment.

And if you still can’t sleep at night despite our tips about fans, we have some advice and entertainment for you here and in the following article.
