Dog rescued from Sarnia fire expected to recover

A dog was rescued from a burning apartment by Sarnia firefighters Tuesday afternoon.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries during the 3:15 pm blaze in a second-floor unit of a building in the 300-block of Durand Street, Sarnia Fire Rescue Services said in a release. The firefighter was treated and released from at Bluewater Health.

The tenant wasn’t home at the time and other building occupants got out safely, the release said.

“Firefighters battled the blaze for approximately an hour before bringing it under control,” he said.

The dog was treated at the scene by firefighters, taken to a veterinarian and is expected to fully recover, the release said.

The accidental fire, contained to the one unit, caused an estimated $250,000 loss to the building and its contents.

Victim Services is assisting displaced tenants, Sarnia Fire said.
