Tappara confirmed the large losses of the financial year

Tappara won the Finnish ice hockey championship last spring, but the background company still made a loss of 227,000 euros.

Ice hockey league club Tappara’s background company Tamhockey oy said on Thursdaythat the company made a loss of 227,000 euros in the last fiscal year. Its turnover last season was 14.6 million, which is 0.5 million less than in the previous fiscal year.

The Tampere club initially said already in June that losses of 200,000 euros are expected for the financial year.

According to the club’s press release, turnover and profit were weighed down by a decrease in non-recurring income and credit losses.

– We were very successful operationally during the financial period. Ticket revenue, corporate and fan product sales were all at record levels. However, the result of the financial year was reduced to a loss as non-recurring income items decreased significantly and credit losses increased at the same time. The excellent sporting success was not enough to bring sufficient additional income by the time of the playoffs, starting with the semi-finals, mainly for the League, said Tappara’s CEO Mika Aro in the bulletin.

At the end of the season, Tappara celebrated the Finnish championship for the second time in a row.

– Good sports success and high playoff viewership currently do not produce the kind of financial results that would normally be required in business operations after similar investments. Tappara’s box office revenue from the semi-finals and finals was 1.60 million euros. From this amount, we got 20 percent for ourselves, which is not enough to cover the changing costs of organizing matches, let alone salaries, continued Aro.

The club said that it has started an internal efficiency program, with which it aims for savings and additional income in such a way that reaching the quarter-finals would mean a positive business result.

The entire Tamhockey Group’s loss for the financial year was 448,000 euros. The group’s turnover in the fiscal year 2023–2024 was a record 18.1 million. It was 0.8 million more than in the previous fiscal year.

In addition to the parent company Tamhockey oy, the group also includes Tappara Sport oy, which sells fan products, and Tampereen Talopalvelut oy, a property maintenance company.
