In Dragon Age: The Veilguard you will have to deal with a variety of factions, with six of the groups even being able to round out your character’s background. MeinMMO introduces you to the most important factions and summarizes everything you need to know.
If you’ve browsed through the overview of the new companions in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you’ve probably noticed that each companion can be assigned to a faction or – in the case of Lace Harding – has felt a long-standing affiliation with a faction.
The respective group not only shapes the background story and the behavior of the seven companions, you can also choose from one of six factions to give your alter ego a bit of profile and unlock exclusive dialogue options. MeinMMO introduces you to the six selectable factions below.
The latest trailer shows some gameplay from Dragon Age – The Veilguard:
The Grey Wardens
Anyone who has already played one or more parts of the Dragon Age franchise should already have come into contact with the Grey Wardens. The order was once founded to protect against the darkspawn, has its headquarters in the Weisshaupt fortress in Anderfels, but operates throughout Thedas.
The order relies on a ranking system and is led by the Commander of the Greys. Anyone who wants to join must master a secret ritual and drink the blood of the darkspawn. Since the blood processed by magicians is highly toxic, only a few survive the attempt to join.
While the Grey Wardens played an essential role in the first part, Origins, as the most important faction for the player, they only played a minor role in Dragon Age II and Inquisition. At times, you even had to deal with enemy Wardens, as they had been corrupted by Corypheus.
In The Veilguard, up to two Grey Wardens can be part of your team. One is your character, if you want that. The other is the Dalish elf and Griffon Papa Davrin, who also belongs to the order.
The Masters of Fate
Like Dragon Hunter Taash, her faction of Masters of Fate is making its debut in the digital Dragon Age series with The Veilguard. However, you may already know them from the anthology Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights.
Behind the group are treasure hunters, explorers and hunters from Rivain who have made it their mission to take on the most daring missions and recover the best-hidden treasures in the world. Those who have survived this lifestyle long enough are allowed to dress in colorful clothing and cloaks and wear eye-catching accessories.
The Crows of Antiva
The House of Crows is based in Antiva and influences the fate of the plutocratic nation behind the scenes – for example, through contract killings of nobles or members of the royal family. The assassin’s guild tolerates no mistakes: if you fail in your mission, your life is forfeit.
With Zevran Arainai you already got to know a member of the Crows in Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II. In The Veilguard you are accompanied by a certain Lucanis Dellamorte, who is considered a heir to the throne as the grandson of Caterina Dellamorte, the First Talon of the Crows.
By the way, the crows prefer to recruit attractive humans or elves (preferably orphans or slaves), as they have an easier time lulling their victims into a false sense of security. You can find out more details about the crows in the anthology Tevinter Nights mentioned above or in the short story “The Wake of the Dead” (via ea.com).
The Shadow Dragons
Like detective Neve Gallus, you may also know the Shadow Dragon faction from Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights (anthology) and Dragon Age: The Missing (comic). This is a resistance movement from Tevinter that fights for the abolition of slavery or against corrupt politicians.
So if you join the rebels and put Neve in the group, you will have all the shadow dragons known to date on your team in one fell swoop.
The Veil Jumpers
While Bellara Lutare was previously an unknown quantity in the Dragon Age universe, you may already know the Veiljumper faction from the comic Dragon Age: The Missing or the short story “Ruins of Reality” (via ea.com).
The group is made up of researchers who have made it their mission to investigate ancient elven ruins in the forest of Arlathan. Anyone who has the courage to face the reality-altering magic of Arlathan is welcome to join the Veil Jumpers.
This very forest will play a role in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which will of course be especially exciting if you are one of the Veiljumpers yourself or if you take Bellara with you on your adventure.
The companions from Dragon Age: The Veilguard in the trailer:
The vigil
Last but not least, the Mortalitasi mages from Nevarra’s Mourning Watch are still missing. One of these mages is called Emmrich Volkarin and is one of the potential companions from The Veilguard. You might know the necromantic order from Dragon Age: Tevinter Nights.
One of the duties of the Mourning Watch is to look after the Great Necropolis of Nevarra. They also deal with failed magic, Nevarran burial laws, and corpse ownership, as well as controlling the gravediggers. All of this may explain why the undead and ghosts wander around the necropolis.
Other non-playable factions
Unlike in Dragon Age: Inquisition, the Inquisition will most likely only play a minor role in The Veilguard. After all, you will meet two former or current members of the Inquisition, Harding and Varric – and the scout can even be one of your companions.
It is also clear that you will have to deal with Qunari again. These are the followers of the teachings of Qun, who can belong to the Kossith, humans, elves and dwarves. With Taash, a Qunari can even end up in your group.
What is Dragon Age: The Veilguard? The game comes from the game developer Bioware. It is the fourth part of the main series after Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition.
