Final Fantasy XIV: Player is so annoyed by a healing spell in the MMORPG that he creates a website: “I’ve finally had enough”

Fed up of healers in his party not stopping spamming a particular spell, a Final Fantasy XIV player has created a website to educate other players on why the spell isn’t the best choice.

Final Fantasy XIV is known for its friendly community. But sometimes it happens that individual players or individual spells cause frustration. A player has had enough of a healing spell that he thinks is not effective enough.

What healing spell is it? The player named BakaDango took his frustrations about the healing spell Cure 1 (also known as Vita) to reddit. White mages can use this single-target heal from level 2. However, this spell is often used when more effective healing spells have already been unlocked – we’re talking about Cure 2 (Vitra), which you get at level 30.

BakaDango was obviously fed up with seeing White Mages spamming Cure 1 in his raids. Last night, after over 30 minutes of Alexander, I finally had enough of Cure 1 WHMs. So he decided to create the website Stopusingcure1.info to explain to other players the disadvantages of Cure 1 and the advantages of Cure 2.

Many inexperienced players continue to rely on Cure 1 even though they have already unlocked Cure 2. When you cast Cure 1, there is a chance that the next use of Cure 2 will be free – but this is a trap.

Others are amused by the way Cure 1 is being demonized – as you can see on X:

Why Cure 2 is the better choice

What makes Cure 2 better? BakaDango explains on the website why you should rather rely on Cure 2:

  • Stronger and faster healing: Cure 2 heals with 800 potency (from level 85) per spell, while Cure 1 only heals with 500 potency (also from level 85). This means that with Cure 2 you need fewer spells (i.e. GCDs) to achieve the same amount of healing, giving you more time for damaging spells – if you want.
  • Freecure Trap: Cure 1 has a 15% chance to trigger a free cure, where the next Cure 2 spell costs no MP (mana). However, this doesn’t happen often and is usually ineffective, as you have to cast a lot of Cure 1 spells to get a free Cure 2 cast.
  • MP Management: Although Cure 2 costs more MP (1000 MP instead of 400 MP for Cure 1), you can still restore MP with the Lucid Dreaming ability, making the higher MP cost of Cure 2 less important.
  • A player on reddit explains that the Freecure effect from Final Fantasy XIV is now outdated. Freecure used to be useful because healers often had problems with MP. Back then, a character’s maximum MP increased with level. Today, everyone always has 10,000 MP and you can use Lucid Dreaming to solve MP problems.

BakaDango makes it clear on his website that the problem is not due to the players themselves, but rather to the game design of Final Fantasy XIV. The game does not adequately explain when and why certain spells become ineffective. This leads to many players who rely on the descriptions of the skills mistakenly assuming that Cure 1 is a sensible choice, even if Cure 2 is already available. MeinMMO author Fabienne Kissel managed one of the most difficult fights in Final Fantasy XIV with the Sage (shield healer), but made a fatal mistake.
