The Umbrella Academy has delighted many Netflix subscribers with its first three seasons – and I am definitely one of them. A dysfunctional patchwork family initiates the apocalypse in an endless loop and then has to save the world again. A vicious circle that is a lot of fun. In the final 4th season But the fun has come to an end for many fans. The press was also at least divided about the conclusion of The Umbrella Academy.

A quick look at the world’s largest film and series rating platform IMDb tells a devastating story for the finale of The Umbrella Academy. Every single episode can be rated there. While the first three season endings had a very high to solid rating between 8.9 and 7.4, the Finale with a 4.9 out of 10 pretty much on the nose. I want to investigate the disaster: What is it that makes so many fans so angry? Attention, the following spoiler!
If you search for Umbrella Academy on X and scroll a few meters, you can quickly identify the biggest criticisms: Firstly, there are the unnecessary love story between Rita and Five – many would have liked a happy ending for Rita and Diego. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter because everyone dies in the end anyway.
This brings us to the main outburst among the fans: Everyone diesAt least all the main characters that we have grown so fond of over the years. Since the world can only function harmoniously without them, they disappear from it in the end. They therefore never existed in the world of The Umbrella Academy, but their children make it into the “real” and final timeline. That doesn’t make much sense.

The Umbrella Academy: The chaos troop must die in the end
There are also other logical errors and missing characters like Sloane, Luther’s wife. She is not mentioned at all in season 4, as if she had never existed. “Worst series finale ever”, writes a (former?) fan on Reddit.
If you think about it for a while, the following criticism is probably the one I can understand best – it is explained in an exciting Reddit post: The series was about children who were victims of a tyrannical alien father and who ultimately emancipated themselves from him and freed themselves from his clutches with their collective strength. The fact that they themselves are the problem in the end, simply because they exist, is a bitter and not fully thought out message.
Fans had to wait over two years for the final 6 episodes, only to experience this huge disappointment. After its initial success, The Umbrella Academy will probably go down in the inglorious list of the most disappointing series endings.
