Mpox: African Union health agency declares ‘public health emergency’

Mpox African Union health agency declares public health emergency

The African Union’s health agency, Africa CDC, declared a continent-wide public health emergency on Tuesday, August 13, over the spread of mpox, long known as monkeypox. This is its highest level of alert. A new strain of the virus was detected in September 2023 in South Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. It is more virulent than the one that caused the global outbreak in 2022.
