Tenants were forced from their homes after a fire Sunday morning at an apartment building near London Road and East Street in Sarnia.

The accidental fire broke out around 6 am, Sarnia Fire Rescue Services fire prevention officer Pete Aalbers said Monday. Damage is estimated at about $500,000.

The Canadian Red Cross is assisting the building’s tenants, he said.

“The property owner is arranging tenant access to apartments for necessities,” Aalbers said.

Sarnia Fire Rescue said Sunday in a social media post that a cat died in the fire.

Police vehicle struck while attempting to stop theft suspects

Sarnia police are looking for a red Ford Bronco and two men after a theft Saturday from a store in the city.

A citizen reported seeing two men enter a large retailer in the area of ​​Quinn Drive and Lambton Mall Road around 5 pm, fill a cart with tools and leave through a rear security door, near where a vehicle was parked, police said.

Police located the Ford Bronco, which struck the bumper of a police vehicle.

“A short pursuit of the suspects was initiated but called off due to the dangerous driving of the suspects and the police concerns for public safety,” police said.

The suspects are described as two South Asian men. The vehicle had the license plate 6302NT from Brampton, but police said it doesn’t belong to that vehicle.
