Gerard Butler is a welcome regular guest in action films. No one can accuse the star of not giving his all to his roles as world savior or presidential protector. Even if he almost lost an eye at the beginning of his career or later injected himself with the venom of 23 bees. However, even for the hardened actor, it was an unpleasant new experience when he came into contact with caustic acid during a shoot three years ago.
Gerard Butler accidentally smeared acid on his face while filming Plane
In the action thriller Plane by Jean-François Richet (Public Enemy No. 1), Gerard Butler plays the pilot of a passenger plane whose Plane crashes over the PhilippinesHowever, on the tropical island that he reaches with his emergency landing, the travelers are taken hostage by armed rebels. He then has no choice but to join forces with a prisoner (Mike Colter) who is transported on board in order to save the people entrusted to him.
However, the eponymous airplane itself became even more dangerous than the fictional hostage situation during the filming of Plane. Gerard Butler revealed this unexpected turn of events on the set in the fall of 2021 on the show Late Night with Seth Meyers:
Leonine
Gerard Butler, still uncorroded
In the scene I’m trying to figure out what’s wrong with the plane so we can take off again. […] So I stuck my hand between two wheels and pretended I knew what I was doing. Whatever was in there, every time I pulled my hands out, they were covered with blood and green fluid. I didn’t know what this green liquid was.
And we were filming in Puerto Rico, so I was covered in sweat. With the adrenaline, a runny nose and everything […] I must have rubbed my face. And suddenly it was in my throat, my mouth, my nose and my eyes. It burned my face – and I mean burning. As it turned out, it was basically Phosphoric acid. And the airplane pilots who were watching were shouting, ‘No!’ because someone was trying to put water on my face. ‘No water! That will only make it worse!’ And I just thought I was burning alive, it was that intense. It burned for hours, but it was great for the scene.
Luckily, Gerard Butler did not suffer any permanent injuries from the acid contact after the incident. Plane is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video *
