Lord of the Rings series already reveals a lot of

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will be released on Amazon Prime in a few weeks. After the fantasy return remained tight-lipped about details regarding Season 2, which went beyond Sauron’s rise with the eponymous rings, the soundtrack’s track list now clarifies some new details. Read on at your own risk. Also be warned about the heavy metal screams of singing trolls.

Lord of the Rings soundtrack spoils season 2 of The Rings of Power with music

As in season 1, film and series composer Bear McCreary (The Walking Dead) is once again creating the music for the second season of the Lord of the Rings series. Amazon recently announced the soundtrack list of the new instrumental pieces and songs. Some of the titles of the upcoming songs already anticipate events and characters from Middle Earth that had previously only been speculated about in rumors. Here you can find the Tracklist including noteswhat the individual songs reveal. Among the 25 pieces there are currently nine songs with vocals:

  • 1. Old Tom Bombadil (feat. Rufus Wainwright) – the Tolkien legend, already revealed in pictures, becomes the teacher of the stranger
  • 2. Rhûn (feat. The Mystery of the Bulgarian Voices)
    – is the legendary wasteland in the east of Middle Earth, where Nori and the stranger travel for their star constellation
  • 3. Life in the Canyon – could refer to the new Hobbit precursor of the “Stoors”, which can be seen in the first pictures in a ravine
  • 4. Golden Leaves (feat. Benjamin Walker)
    – the “golden leaves of Lindon” fell in season 1, now there is apparently a new development regarding tree death and elf fading
  • 5. Cirdan’s Perfection – the new character of the bearded elf Círdan becomes so important to the plot that he deserves his own play
  • 6. Stone Singers (feat. Sophia Nomvete)
    – apparently Durin’s dwarf wife Disa is getting more stone singers to help her uncover the mountain’s secrets
  • 7. Sandstorm at the Well – the trailer already showed the stranger at a well in the eye of a desert storm; natural disaster or magical self-inflicted error?
  • 8. Region
    – is the elven city where Celebrimbor built his forge in Season 1
  • 9. Emissary at the Forge – hmm, who could be the messenger at this very forge? Perhaps a certain newlywed blonde?
  • 10. Shelob
    – Giant spider Shelob is really back, albeit a little smaller, as the trailer shows
  • 11. The Pyre (feat. Raya Yarbrough) – almost sounds like a confirmation that Bronwyn’s body will be burned at the stake after Nazanin Boniadi’s exit
  • 12. Estrid – was already seen as a new character in pictures with Isildur and Arondir and despite being handcuffed in the trailer, apparently has a leading role with his own musical theme (presumably with actress Nia Towle as Isildur’s love interest)

  • 13. The Great Eagle
    – the eagles are back, as the trailer on Númenor showed … and will probably soon reignite the discussions about their role in Middle Earth
  • 14. The River-daughter (feat. Raya Yarbrough)
    – while Tom Bombadil has already been revealed, this track probably refers to his wife Goldberry, who is also called “Daughter of the River” by Tolkien
  • 15. Barrow-wights

If you still had doubts about the new ghost figures: they are actually grave monsters
  • 16. Forgiveness Takes an Age – “Forgiveness takes an age” is a sentence spoken by the Ents or Entwomen in the trailer
  • 17. Candles on the Tide (feat. Clydene Jackson)
    – Candles on the water: ceremony or burial at sea?
  • 18. Army of Orcs
    – Adar continues to breed his Orc army in Mordor
  • 19. The Last Ballad of Damrod (feat. Jens Kidman)
    – the hill troll gets a heavy metal song, more on that below
  • 20. Battle for Eregion – after years of speculation, it is now officially clear that the 2-episode long battle is Tolkien’s Battle of Eregion
  • 21. Durin’s Bane – the Balrog was already seen in the long trailer and a song suggests that his appearance this time will be bigger than in season 1
  • 22. Last Temptation – the rings tempt their wearers and change them, the “last temptation” sounds fatal for some characters
  • 23. The Staff – the “staff” can actually only be a magical walking stick for the stranger, who will receive his name in season 2
  • 24. Old Tom Bombadil Reprise (feat. Rory Kinnear and Daniel Weyman)
    – Tom Bombadil is apparently important enough to be allowed to sing his song twice
  • 25. The Sun Yet Shines
    – despite the promised dark second season, there is a ray of hope at the end of the soundtrack: that the sun is still shining
  • The first Lord of the Rings song released in Season 2 is the heavy metal song of a bloodthirsty troll

After a picture of the hill troll Damrod introduced the new character as a homage to a Breaking Bad character, the monster now gets his own song. Jens Kidman, singer of the Swedish Extreme Metal-Band Meshugga sang – or screamed – the Song The Last Ballad of Damrod which has now been released as the first track in advance. You can listen to it here:

According to Tolkien’s translation, the name Damrod means “Metal Hammer”which fits the type of heavy metal music style chosen. Damrod will probably rage in the Battle of Eregion on the side of Adar and his orcs. In the lyrics, the troll sings about his lonely existence, breaking (dragon) bones and his general bloodlust when the battle horn calls him into battle.

It is unclear whether the song will be heard within the episode’s plot, i.e. whether it will be performed by the troll Damrod himself, or whether it will simply accompany the end credits of an episode. As threatening as the new Lord of the Rings song sounds, the fact that it is the troll’s “last” ballad suggests that the overpowering enemy will be brought down at the end of the second season of The Rings of Power.
