The death toll following a landslide at a dump in Uganda’s capital Kampala rose on Sunday. At least 18 people have been confirmed dead, including at least two children, when fill piles at the Kiteezi tip collapsed.

Local media reports that many people and their homes have been affected by the debris slide from the tip that occurred on Saturday.

The landslide was partly caused by heavy rains, but authorities and residents in the area have long warned of the acute danger that the mountain of garbage will engulf the surrounding area.

Among them was Kampala Mayor Erias Lukwago, who issued a warning in January.

President Yoweri Museveni has ordered military special forces to assist in the rescue effort.

At the same time, the authorities are trying to ensure that the rest of the area is stable.
