Miep Gies (Bel Powley), initially a slightly aimless daydreameris given the choice by her exasperated parents to marry her adopted brother or look for a job. The shocked Miep chooses the latter and ends up working for Otto Frank (Liev Schreiber)’s company.

The life story of Anne Frank and her family is certainly one of the best known in the world. It has also been filmed several timesmost recently in the form of The Diary of Anne Frank and Where is Anne Frank. Nevertheless, A Spark of Hope succeeds in opening a new door within this narrative by focusing on Miep Gies.
The eight-part mini-series never fails to portray the horror and oppressive atmosphere of the time. At the same time, it succeeds in bringing the characters into warm-hearted moments and to show how, despite the darkness around them, they do not give up and courageously make the best of their situation.

The beating heart of the series are its characters. The nuanced performances Bel Powley as the strong-willed Miep and Liev Schreiber as the empathetic family man ensure that you want to keep watching after the first episode. But A Spark of Hope is definitely not light, emotional fare. Most people are probably familiar with Anne Frank’s biography and therefore know what happened to the residents of the Secret Annex.
Much less well known are the events surrounding Miep Gies and her husband Jan. The two appear deeper into the resistance and reveal a hidden world of Amsterdam at that time. In this world there are still people – although not many – who did not give up in the face of the German occupying forces and who showed both courage and creativity in order to save others.
The great talent of the series is to steadfastly refuse to give up the lightness introduced by Miep Gies’ character, without ever losing respect for its subject matter. The series dares to To show humanity at a timein which there was no room for humanity and to draw characters that are complex. Characters that despair and grieve as much as they laugh and make plans. Finding something that keeps them going. A spark of hope.
