DRC: release of 527 prisoners from Makala prison as authorities try to ease overcrowding

DRC release of 527 prisoners from Makala prison as authorities

In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), 527 prisoners granted conditional release have left Makala Central Prison, described as a “death trap” by civil society. This is the second wave of releases in two weeks in this prison of 15,000 inmates, originally built to accommodate ten times fewer. The authorities are trying to relieve congestion after reports of several deaths linked to poor detention conditions.
