COMMUNITY BRIEFS: Bus orientation day slated for Aug. 17

With safety in mind for the coming school year, the First Time Rider bus orientation day will take place in Chatham and Sarnia on Aug. 17.

The event, organized by Chatham-Kent Lambton Administrative School Services, is geared to students from junior kindergarten to Grade 1 in the Lambton Kent and St. Clair Catholic district school boards,

It will take place from 8:30 am to 11:30 am at two separate locations simultaneously:

• Ursuline College – 85 Grand Ave. W., Chatham
• Great Lakes Secondary School – 340 Murphy Rd., Sarnia

Parents are encouraged to bring their children to this free session, where they will watch a brief animated school bus safety video and then have the chance to board a bus and go for a short ride together.

Trainers will talk to children and parents about basic school bus safety rules, how to cross the street safely and how to evacuate a bus in case of an emergency.

The sessions will run continuously beginning at 9 am and are approximately half-hour in duration.

Two new locations for food handler exams

Chatham-Kent Public Health has announced the addition of two new locations for drop-in food handler exams, to help improve accessibility and convenience.

The new locations include the following. Drop in anytime from 1 pm to 3:30 pm:

• Aug. 13: Wallaceburg service center boardroom – 786 Dufferin Ave.
• Aug. 27: Blenheim library boardroom – 16 George St.,

To become a certified food handler, individuals have several options. They can take a public health food handler course, an online food safety course, a course with another approved provider, or self-study.

Individuals must then pass the exam with a score of 70 per cent or higher to receive a certificate, which is valid for five years.

In addition to the new locations, public health offers drop-in exams twice a month at the Chatham location.
