This is good news for the protection of sperm whales in the Eastern Mediterranean. The population of these marine mammals, which can reach 20 metres in length and weigh up to 40 tonnes, had fallen to less than 200 individuals. Collisions with freight ships are said to be responsible for more than 50% of the mortality of these large cetaceans, which are now classified as endangered. In order to prevent their disappearance, the leading Greek shipping company Arcadia has decided to change the route of its ships.
