“Thought it would crash on the back”

61 people died when a plane crashed outside Sao Paolo in Brazil on Friday night.
Marcel Moura saw the crash with his own eyes.
– I thought it would crash in our backyard, she says.

Brazilian authorities have confirmed that all 61 people on board the plane died in the crash.

The plane spun and crashed in a residential area in Vinhedo about eight miles north of São Paolo.

The country’s president, Lula da Silva, went out on X during the night and declared national mourning for three days.

Thought the fuel had run out

Felipe Magalhães witnessed the crash with his own eyes and says the following to the reporters who were on the scene:

– When the plane leveled off, it crashed, he says.

– And I thought that something must have happened, that the fuel had run out or something. So I ran out of the house and watched as it crashed into the roof of a small house.

“A Day of Sorrow”

Marcel Moura is a representative at the relevant airline Voepass, and also saw the crash.

– I thought it would crash in our backyard. It was scary, but thank God none of the people who live here died, she says.

According to the governor of the state of Paraná, Ratinho Júnior, several of the passengers were doctors who were on their way to a seminar.

– They were people who were used to saving lives, and now they lost theirs under tragic circumstances. It is a day of mourning, he says according to AP.

Deadliest in over a year

The plane’s black box – which is used to record all the information from a flight – has been found, but it is still unclear what went wrong.

The plane crash was the deadliest since January 2023, when 72 people died when a plane crashed on approach to land in Nepal.

The plane was of the same model as the one in Brazil, but the investigation determined that pilot error was behind it.
