Bluewater Health names new nursing executive

Bluewater Health has named it’s next chief nursing executive.

Jane Mathews, who started as a nurse on the mental health inpatient unit at Bluewater Health more than 34 years ago, takes over Sept. 3 in the executive role, including as vice-president of clinical support services, the hospital corporation announced this week.

The current professional practice and patient experience director takes over from Shannon Landry, who is leaving after eight years in the post to join Hôtel-Dieu Grace Healthcare in Windsor, as chief nursing executive and vice-president of restorative care.

“I have dedicated my nursing career to Bluewater Health and am honored to be joining (the) executive leadership team,” Mathews said in a statement.

“I am so grateful to have learned under (Landry’s) leadership over the last eight years, and hope to continue her legacy.”

Mathews, who Bluewater Health officials called “an accomplished and visionary nursing leader,” with “a wealth of experience in professional practice, acute care, policy development, strategic planning and continuous quality improvement,” will in her new role “be instrumental in shaping the strategic and operational direction of the hospital, fostering a culture of kindness and ensuring the highest quality of patient and family-centered care,” the news release says.

Mathews will also “lead the expansion and improvement of patient services, focusing on access, safety, quality and sustainability,” it says.

“We are grateful to the impacts Jane has made throughout her career and leadership at Bluewater Health,” Bluewater Health president and CEO Paula Reaume-Zimmer said in the release.

“Over the years she has demonstrated her commitment to innovation, quality care, and a positive patient and family experience.”

Mathews, a registered nurse, has a doctor of doctor of nursing practice, executive leadership from Post University, and masters of science nursing, nursing management, and organizational leadership from the American Sentinel University, the release says.

The board director with Lambton College and fitness to practice and discipline committee member with the College of Nurses of Ontario, it says, was published earlier this year in the Journal of Nursing Education and Practice for her work and research on the “Impact of Pressure Injury Education on Nurses’ Knowledge in an Acute Care Setting.”
