The issue of shorter working hours – in the form of a four-day week or six-hour working day – has been on the news on more than one occasion in recent times.
But how many hours a week does the average Swede actually work? This has been established by Statistics Norway (SCB) in a new report.

Statistics Norway: The Swedes work more
The report shows that the time worked has remained at an even level for just over two decades. But at the same time, employment has increased, which means that we work more today than before.
– Employment in Sweden has increased in the last two decades without the time worked decreasing, we simply work more, states Stefan Anderssonstatistician at Statistics Sweden and one of the report authors, in a press release.

This is how many hours a week the average Swede works
The statistics, which are based on figures for people aged between 20 and 64, show that we work an average of 31 hours a week.
The report also shows the agreed working time versus the actually worked time per week, which is affected by, for example, holidays, parental leave or overtime.
– The difference between agreed and actually worked time is greater among women compared to men. This is because women to a greater extent take out more time for parental leave and caring for children, says Charlotte Olofssonstatistician at Statistics Sweden and one of the report authors, i the press release.
