Brings classes with different skills

The Steam hit Splitgate is getting a sequel. Now the developers are showing the first gameplay and one thing is particularly noticeable.

What kind of game is this? Splitgate was a surprise hit on Steam in 2019. The arena shooter launched as a F2P title in Early Access and was immediately well received by many genre fans. Shortly afterwards, the servers were full and there were even queues – even though nobody had known about the shooter just before.

The gameplay of Splitgate is very reminiscent of Halo, but with one special feature: you can create portals through which you can travel, shoot or look through. For example, the portals made it possible to flank enemies or open a portal behind them and shoot them in the back without leaving your own position.

The portals gave Splitgate a special tactical element that set the arena shooter apart from the competition. But the success did not last long and in September 2022 the developers announced that they would no longer be working on the shooter (via splitgate.com). Instead, they wanted to focus on a new project whose name we now know: Splitgate 2.

What do we know about Splitgate 2? With Splitgate 2, the 2019 arena shooter is getting a successor that is intended to further develop the gameplay in a meaningful way. However, we do not yet know a release date.

One thing is certain: Splitgate 2 is coming to Steam, Epic, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

We also know that there will be different factions in Splitgate 2. These are classes that have different abilities and all allow for a different playstyle.

We currently know of three different factions that Splitgate introduced in a new gameplay video:

What do we know about the factions? In the new gameplay video, we were shown three factions: Aeros, Meridian and Sabresk. In addition to the gameplay of the factions, we see ex-pros and content creators who have already been able to play various classes and tell us a bit about the skills/gadgets.

According to the testers, Aeros is a kind of fragger. That means that with the faction, your role is to play aggressively and go for kills. That’s why the class is equipped with particularly fast movement and a lot of damage. But Aeros also has a stim with which he can heal himself quickly.

Meridian is a supporter. With this class you can support your teammates with a healing grenade or a scan. The scan reveals nearby enemies and marks them with walls. Meridian also has an ability that lets you speed up all your actions within a certain radius: movement, rate of fire, reloading. For the enemy, however, everything in this area is slowed down.

Sabresk, on the other hand, is more of an anchor, which is good for defending a position, as he can set up a barrier that protects you from enemy fire. But he is also a fragger, as he has sticky grenades.

How do the developers describe the factions? The video also includes short descriptions from the developers about the three classes:

  • Aeros: fast, agile, portal master
  • Meridian: Healer and Supporter
  • Sabresk: Defender and Fragger
  • What do the testers say about Splitgate 2? At the end of the video, some of the testers share their first impressions of the shooter.

For example, Rainbow Six: Siege content creator Macie Jay says, “I mean, the most important thing is that it’s like a true sequel. It still adheres to the core values of Splitgate. So it’s still Splitgate.”

Apex Legends pro iiTzTimmy draws a similar conclusion: “It doesn’t stray too far from the original game, but it still has that fast-paced arena shooter feel that brings a lot of people back.”

Splitgate 2 definitely seems like a shooter that fans of the genre should keep an eye on – even if the release may still be a while away.
