Van Rouwendaal is the fourth athlete from the province of Utrecht to win a medal at the Games in Paris. Femke Bol from Amersfoort already won gold in the 4 x 400 meter mixed relay, rower Jacob van de Kerkhof from Utrecht won silver with the Holland Eight, swimmer Caspar Corbeau, member of ZPC Amersfoort, managed to win bronze in the 200 meter breaststroke.
