The organizations accuse Iran of creating fear with the executions in the aftermath of the 2022 unrest.
On Wednesday, Iran executed at least 29 people, 26 of whom were hanged in a mass execution in prison, according to the Norwegian-based human rights organization Iran Human Rights (IHR). According to the organization, this is the largest mass execution since 2009.
Those executed had received sentences for murder, drug trafficking and rape. Two Afghan citizens were also among those executed.
Human rights organizations accuse Iran of creating fear with the executions in the aftermath of the 2022 unrest. At that time, a Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini died at the hands of Iran’s chastity police, sparking widespread unrest in the country.
According to the organizations, Iran executes more people every year than any other country in the world. Last year, at least 834 people were executed in the country.
