Fillion’s police series The Rookie features regular action scenes, such as when the protagonists in uniform come under fire. For some genre fans, it’s considered good form in such cases for actors to do their own stunt work. Fillion sees it differently, as he explains to Stuff:
I don’t want to do the Tom Cruise stuff. I used to love doing my own stunts, but then you hurt your back or your knee and it all loses its appeal.

Fillion has been seen in action-packed series like Firefly for decades, so he has evidently developed his low-key stunt philosophy through Years of pain cultivated. But the physical consequences alone are not the only reason for his aversion:
I have to go to work tomorrow. I have to. If I sprain my ankle, it will affect a lot of people’s jobs. We can not afford it, to wait six weeks for my recovery.
The Rookie production is a well-oiled machine that Nathan Fillion doesn’t want to get in the way of. At the same time, however, he doesn’t want to hinder his co-stars from doing their stunt work: “We have a lot of talented people who are really keen to do it. And I say, ‘Let them do it.’”
