The defensive strength of Burgos is being its great asset this season and its statistics regarding goals conceded would be signed by any team. Julián Calero’s team has only conceded eight goals in seventeen games that he has played in his stadium, that is, less than one goal every two games. In ten of those games he has been able to keep a clean sheet and only one team, Amorebieta, has been able to score more than one. The defense was the great argument that the team from Burgos showed last season and it was on what they based their promotion in category and, this season, it continues to be their strong point.
In total goals conceded, only two teams, Almería and Tenerife, have better figures. Burgos has received 31 goals in the 34 games playedwhile Almería have conceded 30 and Tenerife 29. In addition, it has more merit considering that the ownership in the goal has been shared, almost equally, by José Antonio Caro and Alfonso Herrero and that position has never suffered throughout the season.
Julián Calero always brags about having a well-covered goal, but the merit must also be attributed, to the defensive line that has alternated systems and players continuously and has performed at a high level. Of all the defenders, the one who has enjoyed the most minutes is Aitor Córdoba. Another of the fundamental players in this defensive facet is the midfielder Unai Elgezabal, fixed in all the systems of the Madrid coach and who contributes a lot in containment tasks.
