Table tennis: Sweden’s new table tennis stunner in the Olympics: The ladies knocked out the reigning bronze medalists

The biggest Swedish Olympic shock so far came in table tennis, when Truls Möregårdh defeated the superior world number one Wang Chuqin – and subsequently went all the way to the Olympic final.

  • Tonight the ladies also had a blast. Entering the team tournament (ranked 15th and penultimate of all teams), they knocked out reigning Olympic bronze medalist Hong Kong, making it through to the quarterfinals.

    – It is one of the best evenings of my life! I’m so proud we did this. It’s crazy, we’re nothing in the ping pong world. We are 1,000 players on the women’s side in Sweden, and top eight in the Olympics – I am so proud, she tells Max, and at the same time receives hugs from teammates Stina Källberg and Filippa Bergand.

    Bergström decided

    The match was a real thriller, which went all the way to a fifth and decisive match.

    There, Linda Bergström (34th in the world) was pitted against Ho Ching Lee (62nd).

    South Korea in the quarter-finals

    Bergström was impressive there, and won in three straight sets: 11–5, 11–6, 12–10.

    Sweden is thus ready for the quarter-finals, where they face third-seeded South Korea. That match starts at 15.00 tomorrow, Tuesday.

    – We get to go in and drive like today and enjoy. We are in the quarter-finals, what more can you ask for, says Linda Bergström.
