Over the past 20 years, a few World of Warcraft players have made a name for themselves beyond the borders of Azeroth. MeinMMO introduces you to some of the most famous heroes and villains from WoW that were not created by Blizzard.
World of Warcraft looks back on two turbulent decades in which Blizzard’s MMORPG conquered the mainstream, secured a firm place in pop culture and became the best online role-playing game of all time for PC and console – as voted by the MeinMMO community.
Anyone who followed WoW during this time witnessed unforgettable moments in which iconic heroes and villains such as Thrall, Arthas or the Lich King, Illidan, Jaina and Co. were in the spotlight.
But the many years have also produced some players who have made a name for themselves with their actions. In this special, MeinMMO introduces you to some of the most famous personalities from the WoW community.
WoW has been declared dead many times in the past:
Leeroy Jenkins
In May 2005, a certain Leeroy Jenkins stormed into a room full of dragon eggs and caused the most famous wipe in World of Warcraft history, captured in a nearly three-minute-long clip that garnered millions of viewers over the decades.
The humorous video developed into one of the most famous memes in gaming, with allusions and references in other Blizzard games, but also in foreign media such as Mass Effect, How I Met Your Mother, My Name is Earl and Psych. Even the US military repeatedly used the clip as a hook for studies.
Our news from March 2024 shows that Leeroy Jenkins still knows how to inspire today: 20 years later, Leeroy Jenkins goes viral again: Professor uses famous WoW meme in lecture.
Double agent
There is hardly another WoW player that MeinMMO has reported on so often. The neutral Pandare double agent refused to choose one of the two factions during Mists of Pandaria. Instead, he simply stayed on the giant turtle and peacefully leveled up – by collecting herbs and ores.
What sounds like a short-term crazy idea has developed into a project that has now been running for many years. At the start of Dragonflight, Doubleagent was also there to reach the new, old maximum level of 70. Twelve days after the expansion was launched, he had already reached that point. At that point, the Pandare had a total playing time of 212 days and 22 hours.
Uncle Barlow
Who still remembers Barlow’s wonderful WoW blog about all classes in World of Warcraft, but also about special topics such as random dungeons, the LFR tool or classic servers? Sayings like “The heal was actually over” or “Hey man, your mother is doing Improved Sap!” have become ingrained in the minds of an entire (German-speaking) WoW generation. All episodes can still be found on YouTube today.
The likeable bald guy who makes fun of Azeroth clichés so brilliantly goes by the name of Georg Zaal and has done a lot more in his career.
