Run Lola Run is an absolutely exceptional film. It is amazingly gripping action from Germany. Things are incredibly fast-paced as Lola runs and screams to overcome obstacles in the streets of Berlin. Despite this speed, it is still very easy to follow the main thread of the plot.

Why is Lola (Franka Potente) actually running? She is running to save her friend Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu). Manni accidentally left 100,000 euros in the subway that belonged to a bad guy. He now wants his head. Lola has 20 minutes to bring Manni the money. If she doesn’t manage that, Manni will rob a supermarket. In the worst case scenario, that means jail.

Run Lola Run is one of the best German films I know
The opening scene is already full of energy: 1990s techno music accompanied by rapid sequences of images, fades and cuts make Run Lola Run a real action-fest. And this energy level is maintained for 86 minutes without the plot becoming unnecessarily complex.
This is not least due to the clear common thread. Ironically, Lola has dyed red hair, talks to Manni on a red phone and runs to a supermarket with a red logo. The powerful color cleverly reminds us of the plot again and again. Because all red objects are plot objects.
The director Tom Tykwer is best known for the film adaptation of Perfume, which is one of my favorite German thrillers. Run Lola Run is his third film and the most innovative thing that German action cinema has produced up to that point. He combines breakneck tracking shots with the typical Berlin techno of the 90s. Short animated scenes provide childlike joy.
