2vs8 is the best mode in Dead by Daylight – But it has a huge problem

The new game mode in Dead by Daylight is really good. Too good, because it creates a new, huge problem that has no solution.

I’ll be honest: I’ve played Dead by Daylight a lot less in the last few months than before. I’ve kept myself up to date, played all the killers briefly to understand them and their mechanics – but I haven’t played it with any real energy.

This has changed completely with the currently available 2v8 mode. Here, 2 killers compete against 8 survivors. This is the first time that killers can cooperate and you can go out with a friend to show a few survivors that they won’t survive after all.

Autoplay

Being able to play killer with someone is so much more relaxing. There are several positive aspects that you suddenly have with 2 killers:

  • When you lose, the burden is on two shoulders. You don’t feel so depressed when things don’t go well – because you’re on a team with someone and can think together about how to do it better.
  • A survivor is constantly leading you on and “triggering” you? Just ignore him. There are 7 other survivors that you can probably get to more easily.
  • In addition, the game is much simpler to play without perks. I don’t have to think about hundreds of perks during every chase and think about what the survivor could do and whether I might accidentally trigger one of their perks. Everyone knows what every other character in the game can do – that goes for killers and survivors.

Too many killers – no survivors

But there is a massive problem that is currently spoiling the fun of the game. The waiting times are long. Extremely long. At least if you want to play killer. Survivors have “instant invites” so to speak and can start immediately.

That’s because this type of experience is something new, especially for killers. Whether you play alone or with two people makes a huge difference from a killer’s perspective.

With survivors, this difference is smaller. Whether you have 3 or 7 companions has only a minor impact on the course of the game.

This means that there are many more killers who want to try out the mode and simply not enough survivors. Because of course: Even in 2v8, there have to be four times as many survivors as killers in order to have constant matches.

And that’s exactly where the problem lies. There are far too many killers for far too few survivors. The waiting times for killer pairs are often between 10 and 20 minutes – the trend is more towards 20. That’s a bit time-consuming and spoils the fun of the game for the killer.

400% more blood points for survivors – but that’s still not enough of an incentive.

The developer Behaviour recognised the problem early on and gave survivors an additional incentive to sign up: Survivors receive a whopping 400% additional blood points. This is such a huge bonus that you basically leave every game with well over 100,000 blood points. Anyone who still wants to level up characters and unlock perks should take advantage of this now.

In fact, the bonus has not helped to eliminate the imbalance. The waiting times are still extremely long.

But I don’t see a solid solution for this. Maybe the mode just needs more time so that more people get used to it and switch back to the survivors’ side. I’m just worried that this massive imbalance could even be a reason not to develop the mode further – and that would be a shame, because I haven’t had as much fun in Dead by Daylight as I did in these games for a long time. Even more than with the best killers you can currently play in the real game.
