This retro print will be the star trend of August – and you probably already have it in the back of a closet

This retro print will be the star trend of August

On a light dress or a bikini, this iconic pattern is making a comeback for the hot summer moments! And luckily, we bet you can find it very easily at home or at your mother’s, or even grandmother’s…

First spotted in the 1930s, the summer print was popularised by absolute icon Brigitte Bardot who wore it to her wedding to actor Jacques Charrier in 1959. 10 years later, Jane Birkin brought it back into fashion in the film The swimming pool with Alain Delon. And since then, it has only come and gone from trends before rising to the rank of fashion statement this season.

Rehabilitated on the fashion scene, the gingham print, also called “gingham”, has thus conquered all fashionistas. And it is still as effective as before! This pattern, which consists of a crossing of vertical and horizontal stripes, is part of the “cottagecore” aesthetic and is available on the most stylish pieces, with pretty retro accents. It also made an appearance on the models of the Loewe spring-summer 2025 show. But not only that! It is also making its mark on the beach. Ultimate proof? Kendall Jenner appeared in pin-up mode in a red and white gingham swimsuit on Instagram. All that was missing were the white glasses with thick frames to recall the 50s.

To follow the trend, gingham can tattoo a knotted blouse, a maxi dress or even Capri pants. And from the iconic denim to the long white skirt, there are many clothes to pair with this print. Otherwise, you can bet on a small top and matching shorts.

Be careful not to look like a picnic tablecloth! If the total look is too extreme, we can easily be tempted by accessories for a little retro touch. A bob, a tote bag, a pair of ballet flats or a bow in the hair are the best options. In terms of colors, we love those from summer 2024: pale yellow, orange, baby blue or navy blue.
