Sarah Sjöström won a close to impressive Olympic gold in the 100 meter freestyle.
But there is one thing that seems to be nagging at her.
A new video clip of the star is now making the sports world laugh – after an unexpected boot to Sweden.
Sarah Sjöström’s career has included most things, but there had never been any World Cup or Olympic gold in the 100 meter freestyle. In recent years, she has completely opted out of that distance, and instead focused on the 50-meter freestyle, and until the end it was unclear whether she would even compete in the longer distance in Paris.
Unexpected Olympic gold
Sarah was admittedly registered, but it wasn’t until a few days before that she definitely decided to run, and luckily that was it. After having the fastest trial time of all, Sjöström made it to the final in a thrilling semi-final. And the final would be no less exciting.
Sjöström was a bit behind in the race, but made an almost inhuman finish to the race, and it was enough for a sensational Olympic gold. Afterwards, Sjöström burst into tears in the first TV interview she did, and it was clear that she not only surprised the entire Swedish people with the effort, but also herself.
– I am completely shocked. I have never surprised myself this much in my entire life, said Sjöström in Max.
The pass – to Sweden
But it seems to be something that is gnawing at Sjöström. The Swede frequently updates with videos on TikTok, where she shares her life as an elite swimmer and from the Olympic village. After the gold race, Sjöström has uploaded a video which at the time of writing has close to a million(!) views, and over 75,000 likes. In the video, Sjöström sits on a bus, while a song about one day she will get paid plays in the background. As text, Sjöström has written that Olympic gold medalists from Hong Kong and Singapore receive over eight million kroner per Olympic gold, while Swedish athletes receive zero kroner.
The whole thing can be interpreted as a fit against the fact that Sjöström is unhappy that no prize money is awarded, and in the comment section there are many who think that Sjöström’s clip was both witty and funny.
“In Sweden, it’s the effort that counts,” reads one comment that has received over 10,000 likes.
“You won the honor, that’s what counts,” writes another, jokingly.
But many also believe that Sjöström should settle for all the millions she earned earlier in her career, and that the Olympic gold will generate income in the form of sponsorship money.
