The service for correcting your tax return opened on Wednesday

The service for correcting your tax return opened on Wednesday, July 31 on impots.gouv.fr. You have until December 4 to report an error found on your 2023 tax notice.

Like more than 10 million households, you had to fill out your tax return a few weeks ago now. A stressful moment that we could do without! The posting of your 2024 tax notice on the tax website and the sending of its paper version by post to your home began on July 24 and will last until August 29. This is the opportunity to check that you have filled in all the necessary boxes and that you have not forgotten anything.

But, even if you have benefited from the pre-filled declaration, you are not immune to the possibility of an error slipping into it. Enough to influence your withholding tax rate, or even the amount to be returned to the tax authorities or the amount that must be reimbursed to you by the tax authorities! If this is the case, don’t panic! The 2023 income tax return correction service has opened on the official tax website and is accessible from July 31 to December 4, 2024 inclusive, allowing you to correct your errors in a few clicks on your personal space.

2024 Taxes: Check that your tax return is correct

The correction portal is designed to be intuitive and easy to use. To access it, go to impots.gouv.fr, provide your tax number and password and then click on “Access online correction”. After logging in, you will access your personal space where you can view your initial declaration and make the necessary changes. You can modify the income declared (wages, property income, etc.), deductible expenses (alimony, actual expenses, etc.) and tax reductions and credits (donations, home employment, etc.), by correcting the amounts initially entered and checking or unchecking the corresponding boxes. Once the corrections have been made, a new declaration is generated, taking into account the adjustments made. Once the initial income declaration has been corrected, a confirmation email will be sent to you and you will receive a new final tax notice.

Please note that you can correct your tax return as many times as you want until the online correction service closes. Please note, however, that some corrections cannot be made online. Complex changes, such as those relating to a change in family situation (marriage, civil partnership, termination of civil partnership, divorce, death, addition of a student child attached to the tax household, change of your tax residence address) or significant professional situation, may require direct contact with the tax center or the submission of additional documents.

Please note, this only applies if you have completed your declaration online! If you have completed it on paper, you will need to submit a complaint to the tax authorities to have it corrected, by post, via your secure messaging service or by going to the counter of your public finance centre. You have until 31 December 2026 to take action.

Be particularly careful this year, especially if you are a landlord and are subject to the real property income regime for the taxation of your rents! Indeed, unlike previous years, the property income declaration no. 2044 that can be completed online did not allow the automatic carry-over of your deficits from previous years to your taxable income for 2023. More precisely, only your property deficit from 2022 that could still be carried forward was automatically taken into account, but not those that may have been recorded between 2013 and 2021. It is therefore up to you to calculate your previous deficits from 2013 to 2021 that could still be carried forward to your rents for 2023. Don’t wait too long!
