Unauthorized marriage officiant – married couple asks the government for help

They took each other as husband and wife.
But after the wedding, it turned out that the officiant was not authorized – and that the couple were therefore not married.
Now they are asking the government for help, reports the news agency Siren.

A Scanian couple got married in June. At least that’s what they thought.

The officiant had missed that her appointment expired last year – and therefore lacked the authority to marry the couple.

Now they have turned to the government for help.

The application got lost in the mail

“At the time of the wedding, there was nothing to indicate that the wedding would be invalid,” the couple wrote in a letter.

The letter states that the wedding officiant has applied for an extension of his appointment via post. But the letter disappeared and misunderstandings arose.

“The lack of response was perceived by Lisbeth Persson Ekström as meaning that the appointment continued”, they write further.

After the wedding, the couple must have received a marriage certificate and also registered as married with the Tax Agency.
