Cobra Kai has released five episodes of the 6th season on Netflix, with ten more episodes to come to hold one last big tournament, the Sekai Taikai. After that, the hit series will end. However, the Karate Kid franchise will live on, as series creators Hayden Schlossberg, Josh Heald and Jon Hurwitz have now revealed.
Netflix hit Cobra Kai prepares new Karate Kid series in season 6 – about Mr. Miyagi
While the Cobra Kai series brought back the original stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence after several decades, there is one actor who could only live on in memory after his death in 2005. But even after 6 seasons, the centerpiece for the karate lessons is still Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita).

In honor of his deceased teacher, Daniel named his dojo Miyagi-Do. Season 6 finally ventured into the Past of the revered mentorwhen his old student found a box under the floorboards with clues about Mr. Miyagi’s time before he became a karate teacher. The series creators are apparently planning to do this with a Prequel series if you believe Hayden Schlossberg’s statements in the THR interview:
We spoke to Robert Mark Kamen, the original screenwriter of Karate Kid, […] above Mr. Miyagi’s backstory talked about, which helped us with Season 6. Now that we’re done with Cobra Kai, we can actually start to dig deeper into it. […] Hopefully we can announce exciting things soon…
When asked specifically about a Karate Kid series about Miyagi’s backstory, Cobra Kai’s showrunner explains:
Our focus so far has been on finishing Cobra Kai. When the end comes, we will see where the spin-off path takes us. But [das Miyagi-Prequel] is definitely something we want to do.
The Karate Kid Franchise currently includes 5 films, 2 series and another planned feature film. It sounds like another series will be added soon. It is unclear whether the potential Miyagi story will also be produced by Netflix. In such an early planning phase, we can only speculate about a start date. In any case, we do not expect a release before 2026.
