The coast guard: Fewer and fewer are drunk on the lake

THREE NEWS YOU CAN’T MISS:

  • The coast guard: Fewer and fewer are drunk on the lake

Fewer and fewer boaters are drinking on the lake, according to the Coast Guard.

Only 1.82 percent of those who were checked in the authority’s national initiative against drunkenness in July were reported for crimes.

During the last three weeks, the coast guard has carried out 1,377 checks along the Swedish coast, as well as in Värnen and Mälaren. Only 25 of all checks led to a criminal complaint.

Even though the recreational boating season is not over, the Coast Guard sees a clear low outcome in this year’s sobriety checks and states that the declining number of criminal reports for drunkenness at sea is clear.

“The checks carried out give us the picture of a continued positive trend for sobriety at sea. The boaters know the rules and follow them to a large extent,” says Mikael Furberg, head of unit at the Coast Guard’s operational department, in a comment.

The national effort, which ran from July 8 to 28, involved increased sobriety checks at sea, both random and on indications of intoxication. Random sobriety checks were mainly aimed at larger recreational vessels over 12×4 metres.
