From August 20, a new temporary scrapping premium of SEK 10,000 will be introduced for those who scrap their at least 15-year-old petrol or diesel car and buy an electric car.

The hope is that this will lead to more people switching to electric cars, while also removing older cars that emit more from the roads.

Swedish motorists want better pay

However, a new survey carried out by Kantar Sifo on behalf of Kvdbil shows that Swedish car owners are not sold on the scheme.

Not even one in five, more precisely only 18 percent, think that the scrapping premium of SEK 10,000 is reasonable.

17 percent believe that the amount should be at least twice that, and fully 27 percent of car owners think that the premium should be SEK 50,000 or more.

The group of car owners who are the least convinced of the premium’s excellence are those who own a diesel car, where only 15 percent think that SEK 10,000 is enough. 33 percent of those who own a diesel car think that the premium should be SEK 50,000 or more.

Unnecessarily complicated regulations

The scrapping premium is also criticized by Kvdbil because the regulations for having the right to compensation are complicated.

The car that is scrapped must be inspected and in traffic, and have environmental class Euro 4 or older.

You must also have owned the car since September 2023 or earlier, and the electric car you buy must not have been owned by a close relative.

Risks missing the government’s goals

According to Daniel Oldsbergsales manager at Kvdbil, the risk is obvious that the government’s goal of 50,000 scrapped cars will not be achieved.

– For many, SEK 10,000 is probably not motivating enough. The premium for scrapping the car must of course be set against the car’s market value in the event of a possible sale, and a complete and working 15-20 year old car is often worth more than SEK 10,000. In addition, few people who get an electric car today drive around in cars with such a low value.

Several authorities and referral bodies have also remarked that the government’s forecasts are too optimistic.

However, Daniel Oldsberg sees it as positive that it is possible to get the premium when buying a used electric car.
