After a not very summery start to the summer in terms of weather, a large part of France has been experiencing a heatwave since Sunday. A mass of hot air from Spain has risen in the southernmost departments of France. Only the south of the country was affected on Sunday, but the heat is gradually rising towards the north and almost the entire country is affected by this wave of intense heat. The mercury could still reach 39 degrees locally this Wednesday.

While Météo France placed 47 departments on orange heatwave alert yesterday, today, only 41 departments are on orange alert. This heatwave will continue at least until Wednesday, or even Thursday, even if a slight drop in temperatures is observed today, particularly on the Atlantic coast, where “the heatwave episode will decline this afternoon with the return to the ‘yellow’ level for the departments on the Atlantic coast” indicates Météo France in its bulletin this morning.

This Wednesday, it will still be very hot, and the maximum temperatures will be around 40 degrees locally. It is in Lyon that it should be the hottest this afternoon with 37 degrees expected. Météo France predicts 36 degrees in Montélimar and Valence, 35 degrees in Bourg-en-Bresse, Clermond-Ferrand, Mâcon, Saint-Etienne or Vichy, 34 degrees in Chaumont, Gap, La Rochelle or Toulouse, 33 degrees in Marseille, 32 degrees in Bordeaux, Metz, Montpellier and Strasbourg and 30 degrees in Nice, Paris or Rennes.

Peaks reached 40 degrees at the beginning of the week, particularly in Gironde, in some of the departments of the Mediterranean basin and in Deux-Sèvres. This Monday, Météo France recorded the hottest temperature of the day at 40.9°C in Grospierres in Ardèche, 40.6°C in Moules-et-Baucels in Hérault, 39.6°C in Villaries in Haute-Garonne, 39.4°C in Brive in Corrèze, 38.9°C in Auch in Gers, 38.8°C in Bordeaux (Bordeau Gironde), and 38.7°C in Orange in Vaucluse.

If it is intense, the heatwave episode will be short-lived. Wednesday should still be marked by high temperatures, and Météo France plans to continue the orange heatwave alert in many departments on Thursday. A general drop in temperatures is expected from Friday.
