Frenchwoman Cassandre Beaugrand was crowned Olympic triathlon champion this Wednesday, July 31 in Paris. The suspense lasted until the end over the holding of the event due to the quality of the water in the Seine, leading to the events being postponed twice.

The 27-year-old triathlete, who finished ahead of Switzerland’s Julie Derron and Britain’s Beth Potter, brought France its sixth gold medal, and 19th overall, since the start of the Games. Her compatriot Emma Lombardi finished fourth, at just 22 years old.

After much uncertainty about the quality of the Seine water, the triathletes finally dove into the Parisian river. After the women, the French Léo Bergère, Dorian Coninx and Pierre Le Corre will start around 10:45.

Also in the deep end, but within the Olympic pool of Paris La Défense Arena, swimmer Léon Marchand will compete in two successive finals with great chances of medals up for grabs, in the 200m butterfly (around 8:30 p.m.) and the 200m breaststroke (around 10:30 p.m.).

Two other French swimmers are expected in the final: Maxime Grousset for the 100m freestyle (around 10:30 p.m.) and Anastasiia Kirpichnikova (around 9:15 p.m.) for the 1500m freestyle.
