Ruud showed frustration several times during the match. Earlier, he called the referee’s attention because he thought the Italian was taking too long – just like at the “ball drop”, the crowd then started booing Ruud.
The Norwegian also hit a ball hard into the ground so that it flew towards one of the ball holders at the start of the second set.
After a bad first set, losing 4-6, Ruud then pulled himself together and won the next two sets (6-4, 6-3). He is thus through to the round of 16, where he will face the Argentinian Francisco Cerúndolo.
