Childbirth crisis – too few midwives this summer: “Doesn’t feel good”

Some evenings and nights a midwife is absent. You then work two instead of three, which midwife Sara Blanc says would be needed.

– I don’t think it feels good. It’s my ID that’s hanging loose, says Sara Blanc.

Before the summer, there were 100 unsolved passes. There are still 62 unsolved passes in the basic staff. The gaps in it were due to late dropouts and the fact that surrogate nannies were not found for those passes.

Referred to other hospitals

The region’s solution is to refer mothers to other hospitals. Something that Sara Blanc believes has worked well based on the conditions. This means that couples giving birth have been referred to, among other places, Värnamo and Jönköping in the county, but also to Växjö and Linköping.

– We know that especially during the summer months, it is extra difficult to be able to accommodate that everyone should be able to use their vacation. Then you can always have different opinions about whether the level of compensation is high enough for you to want to take an extra pass, says Patrick Nzamba, HR Director for Region Jönköping County.
