Utrecht city ecologist: swimming in the Utrecht canals is safe and hygienic

Utrecht city ecologist swimming in the Utrecht canals is safe

Perch, pike, carp and bream are the fish that are often found in the canals. “They like cloudy water, so that makes sense.” More striking is the visit of the tench: “They like clear, plant-rich water, so that is very good news.” He recently had a special find: “The eel simply swims all the way to the other side of the world here,” he says enthusiastically. Van Heukelom wants more of these species in the canals. He wants to develop more habitat so that water plants can develop here. “Healthy water is water full of life. And that ensures biodiversity, drinking water, swimming water, water sports and a pleasant living environment.”
