The official statement made by Steam within the scope of the steps taken is as follows: It happened: “With thousands of playable demos coming out on Steam every year, usually as part of Steam Next Fest, and millions of players trying them out, we’ve noticed some trends in the feedback we’re getting from both developers and players around the process and functionality. We’ve created an update based on that feedback. We’ve made a few updates to how demos look and behave in the Steam library. You will now be able to add demos to your library without having to install them right away. If you’re not ready to install it yet (for example, when using the mobile app), simply click the new “Add to library” button next to the demo. You will be able to install demos even if you have the full version of the game. This change will primarily make it easier for developers to test demos, while also making it easier for players to install/uninstall demos. Demos can be completely deleted from an account by right-clicking on them and selecting “Manage -> Remove from account.” When a demo is uninstalled, it will automatically be removed from your library.

Steam also said that demos will now have a separate store page: “By default, free demos appear as a button on the main game’s store page. However, developers have expressed that they want to use a full store page to better explain the content of their demos, add additional screenshots, upload trailers, and list supported features. Now that’s possible. Clicking on a demo will either load the full demo page or sometimes take you to the full game page with a button to load the demo.
The separate demo store pages include an automatic demo install button, as well as a widget that redirects to your full game. This allows interested players to wishlist or purchase your full game. In cases where developers choose to enable a store page for their demos, players will be able to write user reviews for those demos. These reviews and review scores appear on the demo’s store page, just like any other free game on Steam. User reviews cannot be written for a demo unless the developer has created a separate game page for their demo.”
The company said that demos will now appear more on the Steam store, and shared the following on this subject: “Demos will now behave like free games and will appear in the same sections and lists. For example, demos will now appear on the Steam homepage, in lists like “New & Popular,” “New on Steam,” and related tags and category pages. We’ve also made some changes to the margins for free games to appear in these sections to better balance free and paid titles. Additionally, Steam will now send you an email and mobile notification when a demo for a game you’ve added to your Steam wishlist or from a developer you follow first becomes available.”
