Femicide is the deliberate killing of women or girls. Every eight days a woman is murdered in the Netherlands, 60 percent of whom are murdered by their partner or ex-partner, the public prosecutor stated in his closing statement. Femicide is often preceded by a history of domestic violence. The Public Prosecution Service works together with the police, government and Veilig Thuis, among others, to identify domestic violence at an early stage in order to prevent it and, where necessary, to take criminal action. For example, the mayor can impose a temporary restraining order and the public prosecutor can impose a behavioural instruction, such as an area ban or contact ban.
