In Algeriathe Electoral Authority announced on Thursday that it had accepted only three out of sixteen candidates for the early presidential election on September 7, including that of the incumbent President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who has the best chance of winning and is the favorite. President Tebboune, 78, had announced on July 11 that he wanted to run for a second term. He is supported by four political parties, including the FLN and the Islamist Al Bina party of Abdelkader Bengrina.

The other two candidates selected are Abdelali Hassani, president of the main Islamist party, the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), and Youssef Aouchiche, leader since 2020 of the Front of Socialist Forces (FFS). Abdelali Hassani is a 57-year-old public works engineer. He chairs the main Islamist party, MSP. The third candidate, Youssef Aouchiche, is a 41-year-old former journalist and MP who has led the Front of Socialist Forces (FFS), a historic opposition party rooted in Kabylie, since 2020. The FFS ended a 25-year boycott of presidential elections.

This confirmation of three candidates, definitively selected for the presidential election in Algeria, is not a surprise: the candidates had to present at least 600 signatures from elected officials from different assemblies spread across 29 prefectures, or at least 50,000 signatures from registered voters with at least 1,200 signatures per prefecture.

According to Anie, they did not collect the necessary number of sponsorships.

Once appeals have been exhausted, the election campaign will begin on August 15 and end three days before the vote scheduled for September 7.
