    US Senator Bob Menendez resigns on August 20 after being convicted of taking bribes and acting as an “agent” for Egypt. The Senate has received a copy of Menendez’s resignation letter, according to Vermont Sen. Peter Welch.

    In connection with the bribery charges, a search was conducted at the home of Menendez and his wife. There, gold bars with a value equivalent to just over 1.1 million kroner and cash worth over five million kroner were found.

    His resignation opens the door for Democrats to nominate someone to take over his Senate seat for the remainder of his term, which expires Jan. 3.
