Films based on true events are not always so precise with the truth, but in the case of the Oscar-winning hit Blind Side from 2009, it was long believed that the touching story was close to the actual events. However, through legal proceedings and interviews with those affected, it slowly became clear a completely different representation out. Today it’s on TV.
From life on the streets to football pro: Blind Side is on TV today
Teenager Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) comes from a shattered family and is left to fend for himself from an early age. When Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock) sees him wandering around the streets homeless and learns that he is one of her daughter’s classmates, she invites Michael to her home. He quickly becomes a permanent member of the family, although there are major cultural and social differences between him and the Tuohys. The family is concerned about Michael’s severe learning difficulties. But then Leigh Anne recognizes his talent for football and decides to support him as best as possible.

Blind Side: Michael Oher sues Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy
Some stories seem too magical to be true. And Blind Side is apparently one of them. After all, Michael Oher made serious allegations against his foster parents last year and even filed a civil lawsuit in August 2023, as the faz reported.
They had, as he now knows, never adopted, but as an adult when signing a document trickedwho appointed her as his guardian.
This included the film adaptation of “his” story, which grossed 305 million US dollars at the box office alone. The Tuhoyes would have been well paid for it, but he himself would not have received any money.
His Foster parents fought back against the allegations and claimed that the money had been divided fairly. Oher had blackmailed them and demanded $15 million because he would otherwise go public. His civil suit was partially successful, but the Guardianship was lifted after almost twenty years.
Blind Side puts Michael Oher in a completely wrong light
In the film, the Tuohys are largely responsible for Oher’s success by recognizing and nurturing his football talent. In fact, Oher was already a sought-after college recruit when he was taken in by the family, as sportskeeda reports. In addition, he is portrayed in the film with very limited mental abilities portrayedalthough football is a very technical sport in which players have to study game sequences closely.
The worst for me was being portrayed as if I couldn’t read or write. When you walk into a locker room and your teammates think you can’t learn the playbook, that’s a heavy burden.
It is not possible to clearly determine which of the allegations is actually true, but it does cast a completely different light on the film Blind Side. Narrative of a poor black boywho has no chance of a fulfilling life without the help of the white, good-hearted upper-class family, would probably not make it to the cinema today anyway. In addition to The Blind Side, there are many other well-known films that are not so strict with the truth.
