Violent landslides in Ethiopia – at least 229 people dead | News in brief

The search is still on for the victims of the landslides that occurred on Sunday and Monday.

In southern Ethiopia, at least 229 people have died in massive landslides in the remote Gofa mountain region.

A search has been made for victims after heavy rain triggered the first landslide on Sunday evening. On Monday, another landslide also buried those who arrived for rescue operations.

It is known that there are also children among the dead, and according to the authorities, the number of victims may still rise.

Similar tragedies have occurred in the Gofa region, located approximately 450 kilometers from Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa. Landslides are common in Ethiopia, especially during the rainy season, which lasts from July to mid-September.
