The Norwegian men’s football premier league (Elitserien) saw a confusing situation over the weekend, when the match between Rosenborg and Lilleström had to be stopped due to fan protests. The background was the protests against the VAR video referee system.

Supporters of both teams demonstrated. Before the final suspension, the match had been suspended several times, he says, among other things NRK.

Right at the start of the match, the fans threw tennis balls and fish steaks onto the field. After a short break, I set smoke bombs on the field.

VAR has been in use in the Norwegian league for the second year. There have been protests in other matches as well, but Sunday’s match spilled over the worst of the events so far.

Spokesperson for the FC Vålerange supporters group Sebastian Now can see that the other teams got a boost from that match.

– I will be surprised if the Elitserien can be played to the end this year. Now all the other supporters know how to do this, Hytten commented according to NRK.

More protests?

Supporter groups in Fredrikstad are also expecting similar protests to become more common.

– I believe this will happen again. There have been protests before, but now the football association has set a line, which was now crossed, Enrique Leonides Arnesen states.

Supporter groups feel that the only solution is to abandon the VAR system. The audience has been chanting about the matches as a protest.

– It’s not nice, but I completely understand people’s reactions. It’s because of VAR, Strømsgodset IF captain Gustav Valsnik says.

Chairman of Lilleström’s supporters group Joakim Moller believes that those cases are a “victory” against VAR. He did not deny that the events of Sunday’s match were not planned and believes that there will be more of them.
