Tennis: The announcement: Andy Murray ends his tennis career after the Olympics

Scotsman Andy Murray was for a long time one of the world’s best tennis players, and has won a total of 46 ATP tournaments.

He is also the only player to win two Olympic gold medals in singles. He won both the Olympics at home against the British in London 2012, and defended the gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

And the Olympics will be his last tournament. He announced this on Tuesday morning.

“I have arrived in Paris for my very last tennis tournament. Racing for Great Britain has been by far the proudest weeks of my career and I am extremely proud to do it one last time,” he writes on X.

    World number one in 2016

Murray was at his peak in 2016. Then he was ranked number one in the world, won Wimbledon and the Olympics and was also in the finals of the Australian Open and the French Open.

However, his final years have been spoiled by injuries. His last title on the ATP tour was won in Belgium in 2019, and his last finals appearance was in Qatar in February 2023, when he lost in straight sets to Daniil Medvedev.
