“The Flower Island” is a nice alternative to the crowds of Santorini and Mykonos.

If you dream of a getaway to a Mediterranean island without spending a fortune and far from the crowds, a little-known destination could well seduce you. Good news, it is located in Greece, one of the most popular European countries in recent years for French tourists!

Many are tempted by the views of Santorini, the sunsets over the Aegean Sea, the white houses and its breathtaking panoramas… At least for what we see on Instagram. Alas, if Santorini is famous for its spectacular sunsets and its white sand beaches, the Cyclades island is also famous for its crowds, an over-tourism that has become hellish and prices that border on the ridiculous with rates that have become exorbitant in the hotels and accommodations offered.

There are, however, some very nice alternatives in Greece, whether in the Cyclades or further north. Head for the northwest of Greece and the region of Cephalonia, called Kephalonia in Greek. Its nickname, “the island of flowers”, sets the tone for an unforgettable stay between preserved coves, turquoise waters and ancient sites to discover. It also offers one of the most beautiful beaches in the country, Myrtos beach, featured in all the latest rankings of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

With its turquoise waters and bright white sand, Myrtos is a dream location for lovers of coastal landscapes. What makes Myrtos even more attractive is the fact that it remains relatively quiet, even in high season. Another asset is the view from the top of the cliff and at the end of a nice hike is impressive. Be careful if you are afraid of heights!

“Kefalonia” has managed to keep its discreet charm away from the spotlight and crowds of Mykonos or Santorini. The cost of living is significantly lower, which allows you to enjoy a holiday without breaking the bank. Accommodation is affordable and often has magnificent sea views, while being comfortable and well located. You can relax in the sun, swim in the crystal clear waters and even enjoy a picnic without being bothered by crowds as compact as elsewhere in Greece.

For those who wish to explore further afield, Kefalonia offers a wealth of discoveries. The village of Sami, for example, is a must-see with its pebble beach and seaside restaurants where you can enjoy tzatziki, mezze or moussaka. Nearby is the famous Melissani Lake, whose turquoise waters and impressive cave are also an unmissable sight.
