Andrijivka, a village of fewer than 20 residents, was one of the last villages in the Luhansk region of eastern Ukraine still controlled by Kiev, and has been a key target for Moscow. Russia says its warplanes have prevented two American bombers from crossing the Russian border in the Barents Sea in the Arctic.

But in recent months, Moscow has reacted more aggressively to the exercises. In June, the United States was accused of using drones over neutral waters in the Black Sea to help Ukraine attack the Russian-annexed Crimean peninsula.

It is unclear when the flight will continue.
