Bangladesh’s Supreme Court has overturned a lower court decision to restore quotas for government jobs. Pursuant to the Supreme Court’s decision, staff must be hired for government positions solely on the basis of qualifications.
Massive protests erupted in Bangladesh earlier this week after the country’s judiciary decided to reinstate a quota abolished in 2018, according to which 30 percent of government jobs should be reserved for family members of soldiers who fought in the 1971 war of independence.
At least 114 people died and hundreds of police officers were injured in the demonstrations, which were mainly organized by students.
